PW2, Site Safety Managers, Coordinators & Training

 

1. What is a PW2?
A PW2 is a work permit application. This form must be completed by the contractor or licensee authorized by the owner of the subject premises in order to obtain a permit to perform work.

2. When is a licensed Site Safety Manager or Site Safety Coordinator required on my project?
A Site Safety Manager certified by the NYC DOB in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 4 of Title 28 of the Administrative Code is required for the construction or demolition of a major buildings 15 stories and above or 100,000 square feet or greater.

A Site Safety Coordinator, certified by the NYC DOB in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 4 of Title 28 of the Administrative Code is required for the construction or demolition of a major buildings for major buildings less than 15 stories in height.

3. When are you required to have a Construction Site Fire Safety Manager?
A CSFSM who holds a S-56 FDNY Certificate of Fitness is required where a Site Safety Manager or Site Safety Coordinator is required by the Building Code for a construction site. The Construction Site Fire Safety Manager (CSFSM) shall conduct an inspection of the construction site and all fire safety measures on at least a daily basis, and maintain a record when construction, demolition and alteration work is being conducted.

4. How do I obtain a Construction Site Fire Safety Manager Certificate of Fitness?
To apply to the NYC Fire Department for the S-56 CSFSM Certificate of Fitness, candidates must first complete the S-56 course with a training provider approved by FDNY. CSS is an FDNY-approved provider of this course. Additional experience requirements can be seen at

5. What is Local Law 196 of 2017?
Local Law 196 of 2017 requires workers at job sites that must designate a Construction Superintendent, Site Safety Coordinator or Site Safety Manager to receive 30 hours of site safety training by December 1, 2019 and an additional 10 hours of training by September 1, 2019 deadline. In addition, all supervisors (Site Safety Managers, Site Safety Coordinators, Construction Superintendents, Concrete Safety Managers and competent persons) at construction sites must complete 62 Hours of training to attain a Supervisor SST Card.

6. Are Safety Training courses offered online?
One of the major provisions of the New York City Site Safety Training Law (NYC SST), also referred to as Local Law 196, requires any online training taken after October 16, 2017 to be “actively proctored”.
